Home Secretary: 'We will not be intimidated'

1 July 2007

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith gave a brief statement Sunday about the current threat.

After chairing a meeting of the security agency, Cobra, on Sunday, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith gave a short update about the ongoing developments following the failed terror attack in London, and the incident at Glasgow Airport.

Home Secretary's statement

The Home Secretary said:

'I have just come from chairing a meeting of Cobra, where we were updated on developments. Obviously there have been some important developments overnight, but it will be up to the police to update about those as they see necessary.

'I took the opportunity to thank police and other agencies across the UK for their continued hard work and really extraordinary efforts over last few hours.

'I will be making a statement tomorrow, updating Parliament and setting out the government's response.'

'Remain vigilant'

'With the threat level raised to critical, it is obviously very important that people remain vigilant, and carry on reporting suspicious events to police. It is right that there is increased security in our airports and other public places, and there's also a potential for increased security checks.

'I would like to thank the British public both for their vigilance and good humour in dealing with these security issues.

'As the Prime Minister said this morning, we won't be intimidated or let anyone stop us getting on with our lives.'
