On Wilberforce's desk, John Reid signs the European Convention on Human Trafficking.
Home Secretary John Reid marked the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade today by signing the Council of Europe Convention on Action Against Human Trafficking.
The agreement will provide a framework for the minimum rights and protections for all identified victims of trafficking.
Signed at the desk of Britain's greatest abolitionist
In a symbolic move, Dr Reid signed the document at the desk used by the abolitionist William Wilberforce in his anti-slavery battle 200 years ago.
Dr Reid said the signing represented a step forward in the effort to end the 'appalling modern-day slavery we see in human trafficking.'
He added, 'I am committed to tackling this evil crime, and help protect its innocent victims, which is why today I signed the Council of Europe Convention on Action Against Human Trafficking, which will provide us with a structured framework to introduce minimum rights and protections for all victims.'
