The Budget confirms frontline policing will be protected. Police authorities will have sufficient funding to enable them to maintain the current number of warranted police officers and police community support officers until at least March 2013.
The police will make efficiency savings of £346m by 2012-13, but these will come from procurement, information technology (IT) and business support functions. This is part of a challenging programme to improve police efficiency set out in December 2009’s policing white paper.
Departmental savings
The Home Office will also deliver £350m savings from within the department and its arms length bodies. Savings will include:
- £90m from improving value for money in the UK Border Agency including increased operational productivity
- £40m from workforce improvements - for example, introducing new standard rates to reduce the use and cost of consultancy
- £80m from a 20 per cent reduction in IT expenditure
Cross-government savings
These savings will contribute towards the government’s commitment to making £11bn of savings a year by 2012-13 from efficiency and streamlining the centre of government. The £11bn of savings will contribute to halving the deficit while protecting key public services including frontline policing.
