Applications to conduct research within NOMS must be made following guidance within PSI 41/2010 and using the standard form hosted on the Integrated Research Application System (IRAS) using the link below.
https://www.myresearchproject.org.uk/
Applications should be fully completed and all supporting documentation must be sent on letterhead. Incomplete applications will delay the review process considerably.
Researchers should send the saved application form to the National Research mailbox (national.research@noms.gsi.gov.uk) including any supporting documentation.
All applications will be logged centrally in, order to develop good quality NOMS wide management information, and then reviewed as set out in the table below:
|
Where the research is taking place |
Who should receive it |
Who should review it |

* The application will be logged by the NRC and then sent on to the appropriate reviewing body.
Researchers will be notified in writing of the decision. If the application is declined, reasons will be provided. Researchers are allowed to resubmit an application addressing the original concerns, if they wish to do so. If you have any queries you can contact national.research@noms.gsi.gov.uk.
Please Note: This research process relates only to individuals within universities or other appropriate bodies applying to conduct research; no information can therefore be provided to individuals making family history enquiries. Due to the volume of applications from under-graduates and the fact that undergraduate studies are often small and the researcher's level of experience is typically minimal it is impractical for the NOMS to assist such applications, therefore undergraduates are not eligible to apply to undertake research. The only exception to this is for students on placements, supervised by a member of NOMS.
