Spending Review
SR2002/DCM
15 July 2002
A major boost for sport, culture and the Arts was announced today by Chancellor Gordon Brown.
The new spending plans for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport provide for spending on culture, sport and the Arts to be £257 million higher in 2005-06 than in 2002-03. These spending plans provide for an average 3.5 per cent a year real growth for the Department's resources.
Welcoming the announcement, Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said:
"Today's settlement is very good news indeed for everyone who cares about sport, culture, and the Arts."
"This significant spending boost gives me the resources needed to nurture and reward talent and excellence, and contribute to the Government's overall aim of increasing opportunity for all through cultural and sporting activities. As well as safeguarding the policy of free entry for everyone to our national museums and galleries it places a new emphasis on realising the potential of the Arts, culture, and sport to enrich the lives of young people, especially those living in deprived areas."1. The Secretary of State for Culture will provide further details on how the additional funding will be distributed in due course.
2. The Government conducted a comprehensive review of public services - the Comprehensive Spending Review - in 1998. The 2000 Spending Review built on this by setting targets and allocating resources for the three years to 2003-04. The 2002 Spending Review revises these plans for 2003-04 and outlines new plans for 2004-05 and 2005-06.
