National Asset Register
The National Asset Register, first published in 1997 provides a comprehensive list of all fixed assets and fixed asset investments owned by central Government. It also details the evolution of the Governments asset stock by including all available data on acquisitions and disposals.
A vital tool for improving Government Asset Management, the Register has been updated twice, firstly in 2001 and then again in 2007.
The information provided by the National Asset Register
- Enables departments to make more informed decisions about the holding, acquisition and disposals of assets as well as improving the foundation on which investment decisions are made;
- Encourages departments to make the best use of everything they own and to judge whether assets are still needed; and
- Helps to ensure that resources are allocated to where they can be used most productively thereby increasing efficiency in the public sector.
