TREASURY APPOINTMENTS

The Treasury today announces the appointment of James Sassoon as Managing Director, Finance, Regulation and Industry. Mr Sassoon takes over from Jon Cunliffe, who replaced Gus O'Donnell as Managing Director, Macroeconomic Policy and International Finance (HM Treasury press release 61/02). The appointment will take effect from 18 November 2002.

Mr Sassoon, 47, is currently Vice Chairman of Investment Banking at UBS Warburg. At SG Warburg/UBS Warburg he has advised Government departments on a variety of public-private sector projects as well as acting for governments in Europe, Asia and the Americas over more than ten years. Positions he has held include Head of Equity Corporate Finance, Head of Japan Corporate Finance and Head of Global Privatisations. Prior to joining SG Warburg in 1985 he worked for 8 years at KPMG Thomson McLintock.

Commenting on the appointment Gus O'Donnell, Permanent Secretary to the Treasury, said:

'We are delighted to have recruited James Sassoon to this important post. As a senior executive of a global investment bank, he brings a wealth of relevant experience to his new position in the Treasury.'

Mr Sassoon is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and is an active supporter of the arts. He is married with three children.
