SUMMER SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES: 1998-99

Revised Estimates,  Summer Supplementary Estimates  and one New Estimate taken together totalling a reduction of £21 million were presented to the House of Commons today. They seek to transfer provision  requested in Main Estimates between departments, to  increase provision against receipts for existing  services and finally seek Parliamentary authority,  together with necessary provision, for certain new  services.

These Estimates do not involve any change in total  spending plans because any increases sought have  either been offset by savings elsewhere in departmental programmes or charged to the Reserve. Since the Reserve  is part of the control total, the planned total of  public expenditure remains unchanged.

Within the overall reduction noted there is a charge  to the Reserve of £6 million and increases of  £15 million in cash limits and £13 million in running  cost limits.
