Sarah McCarthy-Fry was appointed Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury on 17 June 2009.
Prior to this appointment Sarah was Parliamentary Under Secretary at the Department for Communities and Local Government and before that Parliamentary Under Secretary for Schools and Learners at the Department of Children, Schools and Families, having previously served as PPS to Geoff Hoon, Chief Whip, and as PPS to John Healey, Financial Secretary to the Treasury.
She has been the Member of Parliament for Portsmouth North since May 2005.
Sarah was educated at Portsmouth High School and is a qualified Chartered Management Accountant. Immediately prior to her election as an MP Sarah was Financial Controller at GKN Aerospace based at Cowes, Isle of Wight.
Sarah was elected to Portsmouth City Council in 1994. She was Deputy Leader of the Council for five years, taking responsibility for Finance and Resources and managing the transition from a district to a unitary authority. She represented the South East on the European Committee of the Regions between 1998 and 2002.
Sarah married her second husband Tony McCarthy in 1997 and they have four grown-up children. She is a fan of The Who, and her hobbies include tap-dancing, dog walking, amateur dramatics and twittering.
