The Child Poverty Bill was introduced to the House of Commons on 11 June.
It is jointly sponsored by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the Department for Work and Pensions, and Her Majesty's Treasury.
The Bill enshrines in law the commitment to eradicate child poverty by 2020. It defines success in eradicating child poverty and establishes an accountability framework to drive progress towards the 2020 goal at national and local level. The 2020 goal is UK wide and the Bill contains UK wide strategies and targets as well as duties on the Devolved Administrations to prepare their own child poverty strategies. The Bill aims to make certain that child poverty remains a priority for future governments and a shared mission for our society, helping ensure that as few children as possible have their lives scarred by poverty and that every child has a chance to reach their full potential.
