Local Government efficiencies
Of the £21.5bn overall target local government is responsible for £6.45bn
As independent bodies it will be for individual local authorities to consider how best to pursue efficiencies based on their individual local services. Targets have not been set for gains in individual local services. This will lead to the most effective and most efficient outcome.
It is in the interest of all local authorities to free up as much resource as possible to redirect to frontline services or to absorb pressures on council tax. Local services will retain any efficiency gains derived. Efficiency is about providing better services for the public while holding down required increases in council tax.
The Comprehensive Performance Assessment and, in particular, the Audit Commission's assessment of local authorities' use of resources, will act as a strong incentive for authorities to secure efficiency gains.
