Health in pregnancy grant

The Health in Pregnancy Grant will be introduced from April 2009. The grant will provide pregnant women with financial support, alongside important advice from a Health Professional. This will help them to invest in their individual needs during pregnancy, whilst giving them flexibility to choose how they budget and where they spend this money. It will be available to every woman from the 25th week of pregnancy, once they have had the appropriate health advice from a health professional such as their midwife. The grant will be payable to all pregnant women, and is expected to be £190. It will not be taxable and will be disregarded for the purpose of income-related benefits.

The legislation providing for the Health in Pregnancy Grant is being introduced as part of the Health and Social Care Bill, which is now going through Parliament. This draft of the Regulations is being published in order to illustrate how the Bill’s powers are expected to be used. This draft is not a final version of the Regulations.

The draft Regulations set out the proposed entitlement conditions, the rate at which the grant will be paid and the main administrative requirements, which a woman must meet in order to qualify for payment of the grant.

The draft Regulations are available in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF). If you do not have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer you can download the software free of charge from the Adobe website.
