This is the twentieth bulletin, and the first since N2 on 1 December, covering developments on the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (FSMA).

Consultation

We have today published a new consultation document on implementation of the E-Commerce Directive in financial services. Responses to this consultation are requested by 8 February 2002.

Mortgages and general insurance

On 12 December 2001, the Government announced that it would be giving the Financial Services Authority (FSA) responsibility for regulating:

(i) mortgage advice and intermediaries; and
(ii) general insurance intermediaries.

An Independent and Accountable FSA

On 13 December 2001, the Government announced how it intends to use its powers under FSMA so that all can be satisfied that the FSA is meeting its objectives and that it is properly accountable to the Government, to Parliament and to the wider public.
