Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (40 countries)

The HIPC Initiative currently identifies 40 countries, most of them in Sub-Saharan Africa, as potentially eligible to receive debt relief.

7 countries at decision point

5 countries yet to enter the Initiative

To enter the Initiative, a country must be in peace, have an established record of good macroeconomic management, a policy performance record with the World Bank and IMF, and at least a draft Poverty Reduction Strategy.
