Consultation on Reform of Vehicle Excise Duty to ensure a cleaner environment November 1998    In his March 1998 Budget, the Chancellor announced a significant reform of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) to encourage smaller, cleaner cars.  In particular, he announced that, from next year, VED for the cleanest and smallest cars would be cut by £50.  The purpose of this document is to seek views on proposals to bring this policy into effect.
