Stamp duty land tax (SDLT): ensuring fairness for all

At PBR 2007 the Government announced that it would seek to explore the practicalities of introducing a charge on the use of special purpose vehicles (SPVs) to reduce SDLT liability on high value residential property and on extending the SDLT disclosure rules to high residential property. Last December the Government published a consultation document seeking views on its proposals. The deadline for responses was early February.

At Budget 2008 the Government announced that it would legislate later this year to extend the SDLT disclosure rules to residential property worth £1 million or above. Today, the Government publishes its formal response to this aspect of the consultation.

The Government is still considering responses on the aspect of the consultation that deals with the use SPVs to reduce SDLT liability on high value residential property.
