What does the Treasury do?

HM Treasury is right in the heart of Government, responsible for formulating and putting into effect the UK Government’s financial and economic policy.  We aim to raise the rate of sustainable growth, and achieve rising prosperity and better quality of life, through creating economic and employment opportunities for all.

In almost any current news story, HM Treasury will have an interest because often there will be an economic, financial or social dimension.  Our agenda is huge, ranging from social reform to financial stability at home and abroad, from promoting competition and enterprise, through to providing better public services.

Whether you are looking to start your career, or want to change your career direction, HM Treasury offers a challenging environment that tests and develops your skills, provides plenty of variety, and allows you to be part of real issues that make a difference not only in the UK but also overseas.

How are we structured?

We have seven business areas, which we call “Directorates”, under our Permanent Secretary, Gus O’ Donnell, and we have over 60 teams. An organisation chart is available below in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF). If you do not have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer you can download the software free of charge from the Adobe website.

For alternative ways to read PDF documents and further information on website accessibility visit the HM Treasury accessibility page.

Like most other organisations, we have different levels of responsibility at HM Treasury.  A Managing Director leads each Directorate and a Team Leader manages each team.  The teams vary in size, where some teams have as few as 4 or 6 people, and others have more than thirty.  The mix of people below a Team Leader can also vary according to the needs and priorities of the team.  However, you will find that whatever your level of responsibility, everyone has an important part to play.

Diversity, Equal opportunities and Family Friendly policies

HM Treasury believes a diverse workforce makes a positive impact on what we can achieve.  We want to do everything we can to ensure that we reflect the society we serve.

Creating an inclusive culture in which diversity is fully valued, we recognise brings benefits to both the organisation, and to individuals who work here.   We respect and value individuals and recognise that differences, such as different cultures, lifestyles, skills, experience, management styles and ways of working, are good for our organisation, bringing different insights, ideas and approaches to problem solving and ultimately improves our effectivness.

We recruit and promote strictly on ability and performance, and take our commitments to diversity and equal opportunities seriously. We are an equal opportunities employer and do not discriminate on grounds of gender, marital status, sexual orientation, race, colour ethnic origin, disability, community background or age (subject to our normal retirement age of 60).

If you are disabled we have experience of making adjustments and will make any reasonable adjustments to the recruitment process, and to help your career with us.  To find out more about our commitment to Diversity you can contact Frances Houston via email: Frances.Houston@hm-treasury.gov.uk or you can visit the Race Equality Scheme section of the site.
