Opportunities for Graduates with a 2:1 or higher or graduates with work experience.

HM Treasury offers Policy Analyst and Economist roles at different levels  for graduates, with or without work experience.

Because of the scope of HM Treasury’s work, there isn’t a typical job as a policy analyst or economist.  You could do anything from providing briefing material for the Chancellor, or one of our other Ministers; analysing data and formulating policy options for reforming public service; being involved in the Budget process; or promoting the UK economic prospects in the EU.

If you are a recent graduate, then you can expect to deal with any of the Treasury’s issues in quite some depth for your first 12-18 months.  You will be given early responsibility.  If you are a graduate with 3-5 year’s work experience, we will be looking for you to lead a small team on policy issues, and develop a strategic overview of a particular area. Both the Policy Analyst roles (for recent graduates) and Leading Policy Analyst roles (for graduates with 3-5 years of challenging work experience) could include economics - but we will help you develop these skills if you don’t have an economist background.

What will you do:

Individual career paths vary, but there are lots of possibilities.  We encourage secondments to other government departments and the private sector, and in some of the posts there may be opportunities to work abroad.

To hear from a Policy Analyst or Economist – please read our employee profiles .  To apply for a graduate position please see  current vacancies .

We also recruit graduates through Civil Service-wide recruitment schemes.  For more information on these schemes, see the external links below.
