The UK economy: analysis of long-term performance and strategic challenges

This report examines the long-term performance of the UK economy. It considers the key macroeconomic and structural trends over the past few decades and developments in product, labour and capital markets. It also updates the Treasury's analysis of the strategic challenges facing the economy. It assesses the implications for the UK of new evidence and recent developments in the global economy, such as recently updated population projections, new policy frameworks for reducing carbon emissions, and the recent financial market disruption. Combining analysis of the performance of the economy and of the challenges ahead provides a basis for identifying those areas where the Government will focus its programme of economic policy development.
