Long-term public finance report: an analysis of fiscal sustainability

The 2008 Long-term public finance report: an analysis of fiscal sustainability provides leading edge analysis on the long term. It assesses the potential impact of future trends on the public finances over the coming decades. This information assists the Government in managing the public finances in the long-term interests of the UK, as set out in the Code for Fiscal Stability. A wide-ranging assessment of the current fiscal position as well as future pressures on the public finances shows that the UK is well equipped to deal with the fiscal challenges arising from demographic change over the coming decades. The Government will continue to be in a position to meet its fiscal rules in the long term, ensuring that the long-term public finances remain sustainable. The UK will therefore be well placed to deal with the potential fiscal impacts arising from other long-term trends.
