M40 Junction 9 Improvements
M40 Junction 9 Improvements
00003The Project
The improvement works to the M40 Junction 9 southbound exit slip-road, the roundabout and the A34 southbound carriageway are now complete.
The new layout of the junction will increase capacity on the slip-road and roundabout and will help alleviate congestion at peak times.
What we have done
The new road layout will improve traffic flow across the junction and reduce the safety risk caused by traffic queuing back onto the motorway
The following improvements have been made at the junction:
- the M40 Junction 9 southbound exit slip-road has been increased from two lanes to three lanes
- the roundabout between the A41 exit and entry points has been modified to provide three lanes
- the A34 southbound has been widened for approximately 600 metres and increased from two to three lanes
Traffic Signals Upgrade
As part of the improvement scheme to the A34/M40 Junction 9 roundabout, new traffic signals with extra low voltage (ELV) LED lights have been installed as well as 3 CCTV cameras which will be accessible by both the Highways Agency and Oxfordshire County Council. The benefits of these installations are:
- LED signal heads improve visibility, reduce the need for bulk lamp changing and give a longer life cycle over the Halogen bulb
- Improved safety as these signals do not require lamp changes every six months
- Improved operation of the A34/M40 roundabout
- Improved response times to incidents on the junction
- Cost savings on average of 79%
- Reduced carbon footprint
Phase 2 Improvements
The planned improvements include:
- Widening the A34 northbound carriageway approach from 2 lanes to 3 lanes, then to 4 lanes at the roundabout
- Introduction of traffic signals on the A34 northbound approach
- Widening the A41 northbound exit from 2 lanes to 3 lanes
- Extension of the A41 southbound 3 lane approach flare
The scheme will be completed when funding becomes available. The scheme is not funded for the financial period 2011/12
