The Project

The scheme comprises the erection and construction of three variable message gantries and 7 CCTV cameras to facilitate a diversion route for traffic being diverted from the M1. The CCTV will monitor the traffic flow whin the diversion route. It avoids the use of the A610 and Derby ring road routes A61 and A52.

The diversion is from junction 28 of the M1 following the A38 rejoining the M1 at junction 24a, via the A38 and A50 interchange.

Main works commenced June 2009, completion is expected by March 2010

The key objectives of the scheme are:

  1. Provide driver information on the Highways Agency network performance;
  2. Identify diversion routes and reliable journey time information;
  3. Discourage the use of the Derby City ring road network when an M1 southbound diversion is in operation;
  4. Monitor performance of diversion routes with additional CCTV coverage;
  5. Provide Motorway Incident Detection and Automatic Signalling (MIDAS) for A38 approach to Little Eaton roundabout to warn drivers of congestion, queuing traffic and to reduce accidents;
  6. Facilitate the possible share of CCTV pictures between the Highways Agency Control Centre (East Midlands Regional Control Centre - M1 J26) and Derby City Council.
