The Project

The main purpose of barriers in the central reservation of motorways is to retain vehicles on the carriageway and reduce the risk of collision with vehicles on the opposite carriageway.

The existing metal central reserve barrier at this location had reached the end of its life and work took place to replace it with a new concrete barrier. The high containment concrete barrier also improves safety by reducing the likelihood of a vehicle crossover. It is virtually maintenance free and has twice the life span of a traditional metal barrier.

Construction commenced in January 2010 and works were completed by the target date of 31 March 2010.

The scheme involved over 76,000 hours of works with 80 nights out of 87 being worked, 8.3 km of new concrete barrier and 7.5 km of new electrical  lighting cables.
