The Project

The main purpose of barriers in the central reservation of motorways is to retain vehicles on the carriageway and reduce the risk of collision with vehicles on the opposite carriageway.

The existing central reserve barrier at this location had reached the end of its life and essential renewal work was required. In September 2009, a project commenced to replace the current metal barrier with a concrete barrier. Work was completed within schedule on 10 November 2009. A separate project to replace the barriers between J15 and J17 will be taking place in early 2010.

The high containment concrete barrier will improve safety by reducing the likelihood of a vehicle crossover. It is also virtually maintenance free and has twice the life span of a traditional metal barrier.
