Current Progress
In light of the responses received from the Police and specific interset groups the Highways Agency has decided not to proceed with the implementation of the HGV overtaking ban. The Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO) will remain on hold indefinitely.
If in the future the Highways Agency decides to proceed with the HGV overtaking ban, then we will consult again with the Police and specific interest groups.
The Project
The southbound A1 dual carriageway near Stamford includes an approximate 2.7km length between the A6121 and Carpenters Lodge where steep uphill sections result in Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) running at reduced speeds. This results in queues of slow moving traffic, delays for road users and potential safety problems.
We proposed to improve the flow of traffic on this section of road by prohibiting 7.5 tonne HGV's and above from using the offside lane (lane 2) over this length. The extent of the restriction would be on the A1 Stamford bypass southbound carriageway from about 200 metres south of the A606 to about 200 metres south of the new Carpenter's Lodge junction, a total distance of about 2 miles.
