The Project

Work has been completed on safety improvements on the A13 - A1089 junction, near Thurrock. Work started on Monday 10 August and lasted for 30 nights. The work included improving the alignment of the slip road, enabling motorists to safely negotiate the bend and the installation of improved advance direction signs.

The scheme involved:

  • Installation of a vehicle activated sign on the A1089 Northbound . When activated by speeding vehicles, the sign will display a REDUCE SPEED NOW message. This is to adequately forewarn drivers of the sharp bend on the entry slip road ahead.
  • Reduction of the A1089 northbound to A13 Westbound entry slip road to a single running lane of 5 m by use of hatching. This will mitigate vehicles overturning and increase the bend radius.
  • Application of high friction surfacing on the westbound and eastbound entry slip roads. This is to prevent loss of control type collisions.
  • Installation of new merge and diverge signs, upgrade of existing signs, and installation of new chevron signs.
  • Installation of advance directional signs at the 1 mile, half mile and zero mile locations. This is to adequately forewarn drivers of the new road layout and prevent late lane changes.
  • Upgrade of road markings, provision of lane destination markings and installation of road studs. This is to increase driver awareness of the new road layout.
