The Project

The main purpose of barriers in the central reservation of motorways is to retain vehicles on the carriageway and reduce the risk of collision with vehicles on the opposite carriageway.

Between September and November 2009, over 5km of existing metal central reserve barrier was replaced with a new concrete barrier. During this period, additional work was also carried out on over 2.5km of drainage in the central reserve plus various supplemental works in the verge.

The high containment concrete barrier improves safety by reducing the likelihood of a vehicle crossover. It is also is virtually maintenance free and has twice the life span of a traditional metal barrier.
