M25 Clacket Lane Service Area to J6 Safety Scheme
M25 Clacket Lane Service Area to J6 Safety Scheme
Background
The section of the M25 between Clacket Lane Service area and Junction 6 has been identified as a section of road where congestion occurs on a regular basis with a high rate of change of lane collisions which have been referred to as 'side-swipe' and 'blind spot' collisions. Also, drivers of non UK based, left hand vehicles have difficulty seeing overtaking cars in the adjacent (right) lane.
The Project
This scheme results from the recommendations of a safety study carried out on this section of M25 in 2008. The aim of the study was to identify collision problems, undertake an in-depth analysis of these collisions and to propose remedial measures to mitigate the occurrence of Personal Injury Collisions (PIC) along the stretch. A number of remedial measures were proposed in the reports, which are as follows;
- To provide queue detection equipment (sensor) on the anti-clockwise carriageway that will be linked to two Mobile Variable Message Signs (VMS). When activated by slowing or stationary vehicles the sign will display 'QUEUE AHEAD'.
- To replace the existing road studs with solar Road Studs on both sides of the carriageway.
- To upgrade the existing road markings on the clockwise carriageway to current design standard.
The works were completed over two days between 27th and 29th July 2009.
