A5 Hinckley - Overheight Vehicle Detectors
A5 Hinckley - Overheight Vehicle Detectors
The Project
We have upgraded the vehicle height detector system on the approaches to the railway bridge over the A5 near Hinckley in Leicestershire which has reduced headroom. There have been a number of overheight vehicle collisions with the bridge in recent years which has prompted calls for an improved system to intercept overheight vehicles.
New detectors coupled to electronic display warning signs are now installed for all traffic heading for the bridge via the Dodwells and Nutts Lane islands. This included the A5, A47, Coventry Road and Hammonds Way. The detectors have been positioned on the approach to the islands to alert vehicles and enable them to turn back safely if they are too high to pass under the bridge.
The first phase of the work started on Monday 15th June. This was to install two new height detectors on the A5 with one located approaching the A47 Dodwells island from the west and the other approaching Nutts Lane island from the east. This work is now completed.
The installation of the height detectors on the other approaches to Dodwells island (A47 and Coventry Road) and Nutts Lane island (Hammonds Way) will take place at a later date to be confirmed.
