The Project

The HA renewed the Cathodic Protection system of the supporting beams to the M5 motorway between Junctions 1 and 2 adjacent to Blakeley Hall Road.  This work started on 27th April 2009 and was completed on 17th May 2010.

Cathodic protection is a process of introducing a low voltage electrical current to the whole beam through a conductive mesh overlayed with concrete. This process prevents the corrosion of the steelwork within the concrete.

The previous Cathodic Protection was approaching the end of its life and required replacement to prevent the deterioration of the reinforced concrete crossbeams.

Key Benefits for Public

The scheme prevented significant deterioration of the reinforced concrete crossbeams that support the M5 motorway. If the structures were left to deteriorate, more significant repairs would have been required in the future.
