Traffic Management
A1(M) Hatfield Tunnel: full overnight closures
Road users are advised the northbound and southbound carriageways of the A1(M) Hatfield Tunnel will be closed overnight for five nights from Monday 11 October to Friday 15 October 2010 inclusive for ongoing tunnel refurbishment work to be carried out.
The work will take place between 10pm and 5.30am (Monday to Thursday) and 11pm to 6:00am (Friday) when traffic flows are lower, to reduce the impact on road users.
Clearly signed diversions will be in place.
Road users travelling southbound will be taken off the A1(M) at junction 4 and diverted along the A1001, and then back on the A1(M) at junction 2.
Road users travelling northbound will be taken off the A1(M) at Junction 3 and diverted along the A1001, and then back on the A1(M) at junction 4.
Traffic Management - Phase 1
- Preparatory overnight works start 1 June 2009
- Main works start 4 June 2009 and finish late July 2009
- Traffic Management fully in place from 5 June
- At least two lanes of traffic in each direction during daytime hours
- There will be CCTV monitoring 24/7 and a free recovery service
- A 40mph speed restriction will be implemented
- Night-time (22:00 - 05:00) 1 lane remains open in both directions
Traffic Management - Phase 2
- Work will start July 2009 and finish May 2010. During this period the Northbound Tunnel will be closed
- There will be 2 narrow lanes through the Southbound tunnel and the traffic will run in contra flow
- There will be CCTV monitoring 24/7 and a free recovery service
- A 40mph speed restriction will be implemented
- We anticipate there will be 10-20 minutes delay at peak times on the A1(M)
Traffic Management - Phase 3
- Work will start June 2010 and finish March 2011. During this period the Southbound Tunnel will be closed
- There will be 2 narrow lanes through the Northbound tunnel and the traffic will run in contra flow
- There will be CCTV monitoring 24/7 and a free recovery service
- A 40mph speed restriction will be implemented, enforced through the use of a Speed Enforcement Camera System
- We anticipate there will be 10-20 minutes delay at peak times on the A1(M)

- Work will start March 2011 and finish April 2011
- There will be CCTV monitoring 24/7 and a free recovery service
- A 40mph speed restriction will be implemented, enforced through the use of a Speed Enforcement Camera System
