November 2008

A419 Blunsdon Bypass Construction Progress - November 2008

General

Although there were a few days of heavy rain during November, we have made good progress.

Southbound Carriageway

The new southbound carriageway from Castle Eaton Junction to Turnpike opened on the night of the 15th November.  Turnpike Roundabout has now been removed, which now allows the continuing flow of traffic travelling north or south. This has also allowed us to continue tie in works for the final layout in the areas near the old Turnpike Roundabout.

  • Traffic travelling south and entering Swindon now do so via the new off slip road which leads onto Lady Lane Bridge and the new Lady Lane to Thamesdown link road.
  • Traffic travelling north now access Swindon via the new traffic signal controlled Turnpike Junction which leads onto Thamesdown Drive.
  • Traffic leaving Swindon and heading north now join the carriageway via the new traffic signal controlled Turnpike Junction.
  • Traffic leaving Swindon via Thamesdown Road and heading south join the Thamesdown to Lady Lane link road and cross Lady Lane Bridge joining the carriageway via the southbound on slip.

Other Works

The old carriageway is now only used to access the Chapel Farm, Blunsdon Village and private properties along this route. Now that the traffic is flowing on the new southbound carriageway we have started work on the final tie in of the southbound carriageway near Castle Eaton Junction. We have also started to decommission the old dual carriageway. Environmental bunds continue to be constructed along the old Turnpike Road.
