Gravelly Hill Viaduct - Maintenance Painting, Junction 6, Copeley Hill and Lichfield Road

The Project

We carried out maintenance painting to the supporting steelwork on the M6 Motorway slip road adjacent to Copeley Hill and also to part of the structural steelwork supporting the Aston Expressway.

The viaduct forms part of a series of elevated motorway sections known as the "Midland Links". All roads, including the "Midland Links" are regularly maintained and these sections of motorway at Gravelly Hill are now due for maintenance works to ensure their ongoing viability.

The work included replacement of the existing protective paint system to the motorway steel deck beams, which supports the M6 Motorway above.  The work was carried out as follows:

  • Erection of fully encapsulated scaffolding system to provide access
  • Removal of existing paint system using grit blasting
  • Application of new paint system to the steelwork
  • Removal of the scaffolding system and protection system

Work started on 2nd February 2009 and was completed on 23 May 2009.
