The Project

We carried out a number of changes to the signs along both the M5 and M42 as follows:

M5 and M42 Advance Direction Sign upgrades:

  • Providing supplementary off-motorway destination information on Advance Direction Signs on the approaches to M5 Junctions 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9
  • Providing supplementary off-motorway destination information on Advance Direction Signs on the approaches to M42 Junctions 2 and 3

These Advance Direction Sign upgrades will provide motorway drivers with better off-motorway destination information in advance of junctions. This will improve lane discipline on approaches to junctions and reduce the risk of accidents, as a consequence of drivers making late manoeuvring decisions.

M5 Advisory Speed Limit signs:

  • Providing additional 50 mph Advisory Speed Limit signs on gantries and in motorway verges, to supplement existing signs between the approaches to M5 Junctions 1 and 2.

These additional signs will encourage drivers to reduce their vehicle speeds on the M5 carriageway bends between Junctions 1 and 2.
