October 2008
A419 Blunsdon Bypass Construction Progress - October 2008
General
The weather has been good to us since the middle of September, which has allowed us to make good progress. Areas where the most progress has been made are in the regions either side of the Turnpike Roundabout.
South of the scheme
The section of new road to the south of Turnpike roundabout, (between Turnpike and the existing A419) opened on the 26th September. This has enabled us to move traffic off the old southbound carriageway in this area and will allow us to work on the construction of the new northbound carriageway. The area between the Lady Lane Bridge and Turnpike has seen a dramatic change; an extensive amount of earthworks have been placed that will aid in restricting noise to the residential properties near by. The completion of earthworks in this area has allowed us to create new landscaping.

Turnpike Roundabout
Turnpike Roundabout itself has also undergone some dramatic changes; the roundabout has been excavated to enable a temporary ramp to be constructed. Once in place this will enable us to divert traffic over the roundabout and enable us to work in areas which have been previously inaccessible. Also in this area, the northbound on and off slip roads are under construction. These will connect traffic going into and out of Swindon.

Widhill Bridge
The expansion joints, waterproofing and overlying rubber tiles on Widhill Bridge have been completed. As mentioned previously, the rubber tiles are made from recycled car tyres and will aid in reducing the noise form equestrian and other non-motorised users. The tiles will also provide skid resistance. The steps are now awaiting the final touches of completion before the bridge can be opened.

New Southbound Carriageway
Surfacing is being laid along the length of the new southbound carriageway, once complete the white lines will be laid and traffic management will be added to enable us to divert the existing southbound onto the new section.
