The Project

Electronic Variable Message Signs (VMS) are located at key decision points on the motorway and trunk road network. They are used by the Highways Agency to help manage the network by providing advanced warning of emergencies and incidents.

The Gloucestershire Driver Information System (GDIS) comprises 15 VMS on the M5 north and south bound between junctions 11 and 12. The new signs will be capable of displaying pictograms and red warning triangles which will depict accidents, ice, congestion etc on the road ahead. Other real time information on road conditions, including delays and temporary speed limits can also be displayed. The signs were installed in two phases between December 2008 and March 2010.
