A34/A500 Talke Roundabout Improvement Scheme Chatterley Valley
A34/A500 Talke Roundabout Improvement Scheme Chatterley Valley
The Project
The A500 / A34 Talke Roundabout is a grade separated junction northwest of Stoke on Trent in Staffordshire. The A500 trunk road through the junction connects Stoke on Trent to the nearby M6 at junction 16.
The A34/A500 Talke Roundabout improvement scheme has been implemented in conjunction with a multi-million pound development in Chatterley Valley, Stoke on Trent. This development is being funded by Advantage West Midlands through the North Staffordshire Regeneration Zone and the European Regional Development Fund.
The improvement scheme was a condition for the development of a large nearby area of derelict land into a major employment area. The proposed improvements to the roundabout will mitigate the traffic impact of the new development.
The improvement scheme has cost in the region of £750,000. The scheme includes the signalisation of the A500 approaches to the roundabout and the provision of signals on the roundabout itself. It will also see the widening of Peacock Hay Road at its approach to the roundabout. Other improvements include:
- The provision of advance signs and road markings to improve lane discipline on the approach to the roundabout and on the roundabout itself;
- The installation of a pedestrian crossing facility on the A500 westbound exit-slip approach, in the vicinity of the existing filling station;
- The provision of pedestrian crossing points with tactile paving along the eastern side of the roundabout;
- Localised widening and safety barrier improvements on the A500 westbound exit-slip approach to address an existing overrun problem;
- The application of high friction surfacing on the approach to all new traffic signals.
The scheme has relieved congestion and improved lane discipline at the junction and has also improved safety for pedestrians.
The works are now substantially complete as of February 2009. There are a few minor items of work that are to be completed, and will be scheduled in the near future
