Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you doing the works?

The function of this pond is to filter sediments and pollutants from motorway run-off before the water flows into local streams.  Due to the proximity of the inlet and outlet and accumulated silt, it is not performing this function efficiently.  The improvement work will be carried out in two phases:

Phase 1 relocated the inlet headwall of the balancing pond to improve water retention time and allow pollution more time to settle, improving water quality, before it is discharged into Redhill Brook. In addition, a shut-off valve was installed on the inlet headwall to provide containment in the balancing pond in the event of a pollution spill on the M25.  Work was carried out in January 2009.

Phase 2 will see the pond dredged to further improve the quality of the discharged water and increase the storage capacity of the pond. Work is planned to be carried out in January 2010.

What is a balancing pond?

Balancing Ponds are specially engineered ponds that are designed to hold and store flood water from the road in times of excessive rainfall.

What about the path - where will we go?

During the temporary closure of the bridleway around the balancing pond a diversion will be in place via Merstham Road road between Pendell Farm and the junction with Warwick Wold Road. Please see the 'Contact Information and Map' page.

What about the wildlife?

The work will not have a significant impact on wildlife as the proposed mitigation will ensure minimum disturbance and the proposed work will not exclude them from their existing habitat.

Work close to wildlife habitats will have ecological supervision and follow Natural England guidelines in order to protect habitats. All works vehicles and sediment storage will be restricted to the existing hard standing area, which is not considered to be suitable hibernation habitat. In addition, herptile fencing will be erected around the works area to help protect wildlife..

What is the proposed mitigation for wildlife habitats?

For example, the work will be undertaken during the hibernation period for newts to minimise disturbance. If wildlife does enter the works area then a licensed ecologist will move it outside of the area of work.
