M6 Rose Whittle Railway Bridge
M6 Rose Whittle Railway Bridge
The Project
The bridge that carries the M6 between Junctions 27 and 28 over the West Coast mainline railway at Leyland is named Rose Whittle Bridge.
Work was carried out on the temporary concrete protective barriers on the hard shoulders of both carriageways which were removed and replaced with a new permanent solution. These have been in place to protect motorists on the M6 from crashing through the bridge parapets onto the railway below. The central reservation barrier was replaced and the central reservation itself is narrowed and hardened.
The work started on the 6th October 2008, and finished on 28th January 2009.
The new design will both protect the bridge parapets and also return 40m of hard shoulder which was previously taken up by the concrete protection. We also re-surfaced 500m of the carriageway.
