M5 Avonmouth Bridge Resurfacing
M5 Avonmouth Bridge Resurfacing
The Project
Avonmouth Bridge was opened in 1974, and currently carries approximately 60,000 vehicles per day in each direction on the M5. A two-stage project was undertaken in 2008 and 2009 to resurface the bridge, which was requiring frequent repairs. These repairs contributed to the poor surface profile and ride quality and in the longer term, could have adversely affected the structure of the bridge itself. The new surface provides greater water resistance when compared with the previous material, helping protect the bridge and integrity of the surface, and is expected to last up to 20 years.
Work to resurface the bridge was broken into two stages to avoid disruption during key holiday periods. The first stage of the resurfacing was undertaken on the southbound carriageway, starting in September 2008 and was successfully completed in December 2008.
Work on the northbound carriageway commenced at the beginning of September 2009, and ended on the 2 December 2009. A combination of careful planning and good weather helped the project team complete earlier than scheduled and work on the carriageway was completed three weeks ahead of schedule.
