The Project

Highways Agency has made permanent the temporary traffic trial which took place on Junction 9b of the M25 in May 2008.

Work on the permanent lights  started on 23 March and was completed in time for switch on Thursday, 4  June 2009.

The aim of the trial was to help reduce delays and improve reliability for M25 users, while at the same time ensuring that the impact on Surrey County Council roads was kept to a minimum.

The Highways Agency worked closely with the Council to monitor the trial which took place weekdays between 06.30am-09.30am. CCTV was utilised to keep an eye on the build-up of traffic and to ensure that the use of the traffic lights didn't cause undue delays on the roundabout.

Highways Agency project sponsor, Clive Cooper said:

"We are pleased this scheme has now been given the green light. We are committed to ensuring we improve journey times for all drivers and this scheme will hopefully allow us to do just that. We have worked closely with our partners in the council and are delighted that they have agreed that the trial be made permanent."

Timothy Ashton, Chairman of Surrey County Council's Local Committee (Mole Valley) said:

"The trial carried out in 2008   successfully reduced congestion on the M25 and improved journey times and safety for drivers with little or no impact on the county council's highways network. With the safety and convenience of our residents and those passing through the county in mind, it makes sense to give our support to the Highways Agency in making this arrangement permanent."
