Expansion of information, given in the spring 2007 Public Consultation.
In spring this year, as part of our public consultation, we told you about plans for the road improvement schemes relating to the M11, and we asked for your comments. Following feedback from this consultation, we would like to give you some additional information on the previously discounted options which will now be part of our proposals. These should now be seen as viable options:
- North Weald Airfield - Asymmetrical widening (widening on one side). Widening on the west side only, to keep the M11 away from the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
- Harlow and Sheering - Symmetrical widening (widening on both sides). Increased environmental impacts on listed buildings, a water course and nearby homes west of the motorway.
For most of the route, the widening would be equal on both sides, requiring a strip of land on each side of the existing motorway. There is also the option of widening to the east at Epping Forest and the stretch between Harlow and Sheering. At both of these locations this would reduce the environmental impact, particularly at Gernon Bushes, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
