A404(M) Western Region Railway Bridge Replacement
(The bridge is viewed from the south east)
Existing layout - the hard shoulders and median are slightly narrow to accommodate the traffic lanes between the parapets of the old bridge.
Phase 1 - Traffic moved to north side of bridge, incorporating contraflow and narrow lanes. South side of bridge is demolished and new section built 4.3m wider to accommodate traffic for later phases.
Phase 2 - Northbound traffic is diverted onto the new section of bridge, allowing access to the central section. The existing bridge is demolished and replaced with new construction.
Phase 3 - Southbound traffic is moved over onto the newly completed central section to allow the northern part of the bridge to be demolished and replaced.
Final layout - The traffic lanes run along the old centreline, but with the standard width hard shoulders and median. The extra width which allowed for the temporary traffic diversion will be marked with white lines to prevent general use by vehicles.
