The Project

Tolvaddon Bridge forms part of the A30 trunk road as it crosses the A3047 near Camborne.

In 2004, during our routine inspections, we found that the concrete and its reinforcing steel in the bridge decks were showing evidence of deterioration. Some of the tensioning cables were corroded, and the concrete contaminated. Further studies resulted in the conclusion that the only cost effective solution would be to replace the decks.

We have replaced the two bridge decks of Tolvaddon Interchange whilst maintaining 2 lanes of traffic in each direction on the A30 apart from short periods of traffic management.

This was achieved by constructing a temporary bridge alongside the ones to be replaced, and diverting traffic over it whilst the A30 bridges were demolished and rebuilt one by one.

The safety barriers were also upgraded to the latest standards during this scheme.

We took the opportunity to undertake some repairs to Blowinghouse and Gilberts Coombe Viaducts, which also form part of the A30 near Redruth. These structures received treatment to avoid similar corrosion occurring in the ducts which carry the tensioning cables.

Works were substanially completed by Christmas 2008 with additional minor works finished in early 2009.  For further details and to see pictures of this scheme please follow the Progress Photos link from the right hand navigation menu.
