The Project

The essential bridge upgrade works on the M4 between Junctions 5-7 have now been completed.

The scheme upgraded elements of the following bridges;

  • Chalvey Interchange Bridges
  • Both east and west Prince of Wales Bridge
  • Chalvey Culvert Bridge
  • Windsor Branch Railway Bridge

Key work included renewing the bridge parapets, renewing the safety fence and waterproofing the bridge decks. A hard shoulder has also been added to either side of the Chalvey East and West Interchange Bridges and the Prince of Wales Bridge, and between the Chalvey East and West Interchange bridges.

The scheme has ensured the bridges are maintained to a safe and serviceable condition for the next 25 years. The new parapet on both sides of the bridges comply with current safety standards, increasing their strength to reduce the severity of a vehicle impact, while the waterproofing will protect the bridges from corrosion.
