The Project

To avoid the possibility of land slip, major work was identified to stabilise the hill side at Four Winds Farm on the A46 north of Bath. This is a key route, which required an innovative solution to avoid major delays or congestion. A temporary haul road and platform was specifically constructed on the downhill side of the road, allowing piling operations beside the road, rather than positioned on the carriageway itself. The required only the use of occasional traffic signals to control access to the site, and minimised disruption to the travelling public.

The work took place between May and November 2007. Over 200 piles were bored to stabilise the slope from sliding and damaging the road. A 210m long retaining wall was constructed and faced with local stone to ensure consistency with the local environment. On completion, the haul road was removed and the area was carefully reinstated with landscaping to compliment the surrounding area.
