M4 M32 Avon and Somerset Tactical Information System
M4 M32 Avon and Somerset Tactical Information System
New electronic message signs were installed alongside the M4 and M32 near Bristol to give drivers more reliable journey times, and help to ensure better safety and improved traffic flows.
Now completed the new signs will give drivers real-time advance warnings of road conditions including information about accidents, queues, delays and temporary speed limits.
Work began on 28 November 2005 on the new system, which was installed between Junctions 18 (Bath) and 20 (Almondsbury) and on the M32 between Junction 2 and the M4/M32 Junction. The work was completed in spring 2007.
The system includes motorway message signs and new CCTV cameras to improve driver information, together with infrastructure including cross carriageway cable ducts, roadside equipment cabinets and traffic detector loops buried in the carriageway.
The CCTV pictures feed in to the Highways Agency's new regional traffic control centre at Avonmouth, helping operators to monitor the carriageway and respond more quickly to accidents and incidents.
