A500 Hough Railway Bridge
A500 Hough Railway Bridge
Background Information
When a new bypass took the A500 away from the villages of Shavington and Hough in 2003, the original road was renumbered C841 and handed over to Cheshire County Council. However, responsibility for the bridges carrying this road over the railway - and their eventual replacement - remained with the Highways Agency.
There were three bridges. The original was built in 1905 but for safety reasons it was 'retired' completely and covered by an over-bridge in 1990. In 1993, a Bailey bridge was built alongside to cater for eastbound traffic.
What are we doing?
Work is being carried out in three seperate phases. In Phase One we carried out maintenance work on the over-bridge and the Bailey bridge to ensure continued safe operation. In Phase Two we demolished the original Hough Railway Bridge during the Christmas 2006 break. A temporary pedestrian footbridge and new traffic lights were also installed. In Phase Three the new bridge was constructed.
Completion of the works.
All three phases of the work have now been successfully completed and the new bridge is now fully open.
