Bag it and Bin it campaign
Did you know?
The Highways Agency collects around 700,000 bags of litter each year from our road network in England.
What do our Customers think of Litter?
The Highways Agency has a Road Users' Satisfaction Survey (RUSS) conducted every year which questions respondents about various topics relating to our road networks including litter.
Respondents are asked to rate the importance of keeping the roads free from litter. The results show that on a scale of 1 to 10 - with 10 being the most important - respondents rate it as 8.8 in the first quarter of the 2009-10 survey. The figure is based on more than 500 responses.
We have also worked with the AA on this project, and the results from their Populus survey dated 30 June to 6 July 2009 show:
'I have been responsible for causing roadside litter in the past'
Strongly agree: 2%
Somewhat agree: 6%
Neither agree or disagree: 5%
Somewhat disagree: 9%
Strongly disagree: 77%
Don't know: 1%
'I feel angry towards people who cause roadside litter'
Strongly agree: 60%
Somewhat agree: 28%
Neither agree or disagree: 9%
Somewhat disagree: 2%
Strongly disagree: 1%
Don't know 0%

The panel are AA members who are surveyed every month on line by Populus. There are 75,000 who are signed up.
Our Bag it! Bin it! Campaign
The Highways Agency is responsible for litter collections on motorways in England. Litter clearance, sweeping and debris collections are carried out on a regular basis in the East Midlands region. Responsibility for litter collection on most all-purpose trunk roads ('A' roads) rests with the appropriate local or district councils. The Highways Agency and local authorities do the best we can to ensure the roads are kept neat and tidy but drivers also have a role to play in ensuring that England's roads are kept free from litter.
Litter can cause many problems on our motorways and trunk roads. Litter can have negative impact on the environment, and can also block roadside drains causing localised flooding. Workers that are given the task of clearing this rubbish face the risk of injury from moving traffic and doing this job redirects resources away from road maintenance and repairs.
Our "Bag it and Bin it!" initiative is all about encouraging drivers to bag their litter and not drop it on our roads and countryside. The East Midlands 'Bag it Bin it' campaign took place across various motorway service areas and shopping centres during August 2009. By distributing in-car litter bags we aim to persuade road users to put their rubbish in a bag and take their litter home with them rather than it landing on our motorways and major A roads across England.
Help us keep carriageways, verges and hard shoulders free from rubbish by taking your litter home with you.
Thank you again to all our customers who have supported this campaign.
