Between September 2009 and March 2010, several major road works projects will be taking place to renew and improve the highways network in the South West as part of the Government's 'Building Britain's Future' initiative. The Highways Agency is investing an additional £60m in the area's infrastructure including projects on both the M4 and M5 in the Bristol region.

The first of these projects, Avonmouth Bridge resurfacing and M5 J17 to J18 central barrier replacement have been completed. Planned projects commencing on 4 January 2010 comprise further central barrier replacement on the M5 between J15 & J17, and the M4 between J18 & J19. The existing overbridge at Lawrence Weston, between J17 & J18 on the M5, is also being completely replaced and a full motorway closure will be taking place on 25 December 2009. For more information on each of these projects, please click on the map below to link to a new page. We have also prepared a Frequently Asked Questions document and Publications page.

The Highways Agency seeks to minimise the disruption caused by road works wherever possible. On these projects, three narrow lanes will be used to avoid reducing capacity of the motorways. For the safety of the travelling public, it is necessary to reduce the speed limit to 50mph when vehicles are travelling in close proximity.

Due to the location of these projects and the traffic management required, it is inevitable that some delays will occur particularly at peak times. Motorists are urged to plan their journeys outside of peak times or consider alternative transport methods to avoid delays. The Transport Direct's Journey planner provides information on door-to-door travel using public transport. Live information about current traffic conditions can be obtained via Traffic England, Traffic Radio or by calling 08700 660 115.
